Bruce - the golden color is a result of heat oxidizing the chrome in the exhaust pipe. My '89 has about 13,000 miles on it now and with long highway speed runs this summer - two up often - the golden color has deepened.
Increasing the mixture richness through the carb - which is what the spacer removal trick is all about will decrease the temperature of the engine a bit and may slow or even stop the spread of the gold on the pipe.
I agree with another poster however that the gold color is kind of pleasing and nothing I have choosen to do anything about.
For me blue on the pipe is a badge which tells other riders that your bike is more than just a cosmetic device - you are a serious rider and rolling lots of miles.
Have you removed the spacer? Are you running a supertrap or other after market muffler - openning up the pipe with an after market ( louder) muffler will allow a freer flow of hot exhaust gasses, again bringing the temperatures down and slowing or stopping the oxidation process
Regardless -keep riding and enjoying you Savage - great machines which we should be proud of as the mileage rolls upwards
Keep the rubber side down
Cheers
